Avy H. Stein
Partner & Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Stein is responsible for managing the affairs of Willis Stein and serves on the firm’s Investment Committee. Mr. Stein is also responsible for initiating investment opportunities, structuring acquisitions, working with portfolio company management teams on an ongoing basis and arranging for the disposition of investments.
From 1980 through 1983, Mr. Stein was an attorney with Kirkland & Ellis. From 1984 to 1985, he was President of Cook Energy Corporation, an oil and gas exploration and production company, and Vice President of Corporate Planning and Legal Affairs at Cook International, Inc., a conglomerate that was previously listed on the American Stock Exchange. In 1985, he founded and was the CEO and majority shareholder of Regent Corporation, which focused on making and managing acquisitions in the electronic security and personal emergency response industries. From 1988, Mr. Stein served as a special consultant on acquisitions, dispositions and restructurings to the CEO of NL Industries, Inc. (NYSE) and its affiliates, international companies with sales in excess of $2 billion. From 1989 through 1994, he was a Managing Director of CIVC responsible for managing the firm with John Willis, before founding Willis Stein in 1994.
Mr. Stein serves on the boards of directors of Education Corporation of America, Strategic Materials, FDH Velocitel, Education Partners, Interval Leisure Group (NYSE: IILG), and the successor to Lincoln Clean Energy, which he co-founded. He is an attorney and a Certified Public Accountant, received a law degree from Harvard Law School and holds a B.S. degree in Accountancy from the University of Illinois.
